What I Do
I’ve been writing stories and producing videos about cars and the auto industry since about 2000. That might seem like a long time to be immersed in one subject but, here’s the thing, it really isn’t one subject. The auto industry encompasses every aspect of human endeavor you can imagine. Writing about it requires the ability to delve deeply into all sorts of subjects. Cars are business, certainly, but cars also involve art, technology, physics, chemistry, social science and more.
I’ve been able to write a straight business story one day, then write about design the next and turn to technology and science writing after that. This is not to mention what may e my favorite subject of all, history. My job has called on me to research figures like Henry Ford, Louis Chevrolet and Bertha Benz and even Napoleon Bonaparte and Julius Caesar.
We happen to live in an era when cars are changing faster than at any time since, perhaps, the late 19th and early 20th century. In those days, the world was still deciding what an automobile even was. Cars were still toys for the wealthy and they were roughly evenly split among steam, electric and internal combustion power. Today, thanks to electrification and the rise of ever-more-powerful sensors and computers, a car can be very different from one marketed even a decade ago. The shift to electric vehicles may have slowed temporarily but, most experts agree that it will not be stopped.
So, my long amble through the auto industry has left me with broad experience in any number of topics. At the core of it all is my passion for digging deep and explaining complex topics in a straightforward and engaging way. Whether it’s in writing, on camera, or collaborating on interactive media, I plan to continue to explain how the world moves, how that’s changing and more.
